I first came to Merida 5 years ago because I wanted to learn Spanish. I had studied French in school for 6 years and never learned to speak it, but when I graduated from univeristy I knew that having a second language would be essential to my success in the future. So, I enrolled in a program in Guadalajara and learned how to teach English so I could support myself. Then, without knowing a thing about it, except that it was close to the beach and full of Mayan culture, I packed up my car and headed to Merida. It took me 2 years of being the quiet girl who couldn´t understand anything, but now I can proudly say that I speak Spanish (even if not perfectly, but it improves everyday).
